Shifting from Hobbyist to Author-CEO

Let’s talk about the mental barrier of treating your writing as a real business

Can we be totally honest for a second? Shifting from thinking of yourself as a hobbyist to stepping into your power as a true Author-CEO is rarely about how much talent or time you have. It is almost always about giving yourself permission.

For years, we've all been fed this romanticized myth of the "starving artist," as if caring about money somehow ruins the magic of your story. But here is the truth from the two of us who have been right where you are: if your goal is to make a steady, predictable living from your words, keeping your writing tucked away as "just a creative hobby" is the fastest way to stay stuck.

Let’s break down those mental hurdles together so you can start running your career like the thriving business it deserves to be.

1. Let’s drop the guilt about making money

The biggest hurdle we see authors face is a sneaking feeling of guilt. It’s easy to worry that focusing on profit margins and sales figures means you’re "selling out" or cheapening your art.

  • The Reality Check: Money isn’t a bad thing; it’s a creative enabler. Making a good income buys you the time, the space, and the freedom to create. It pays for the top-tier editors and gorgeous designers who help your books shine.

  • Jo and Jodi's Advice: A hobby costs you money, but a business actually makes you money. Wanting to turn a profit doesn't mean you care less about your characters. It just means you care enough about your stories to want to keep writing them for the next thirty years!

2. Your books are your assets (and your superpowers)

When you're in hobbyist mode, it’s so easy to tie your entire self-worth to your latest launch. If a book sells well, you’re on cloud nine; if it hits a slow patch, you feel like a total failure.

  • The Reality Check: A finished manuscript isn't just a piece of your heart on a page—it is a valuable piece of intellectual property. It's an asset.

  • Jo and Jodi's Advice: Once your book is out in the world, we want you to look at it objectively, without the emotional weight. How can we make this asset work harder for you? Can we turn it into an audiobook? Is it ready for translations? Can we use book one to drive readers to the rest of your series? When you look at your books as assets, marketing stops feeling like a scary personal vulnerability and starts feeling like smart, exciting business strategy.

3. Let's step away from "wallet bookkeeping"

We've all done it: opening up your personal banking app, staring at the balance, and trying to guess if you can "afford" a new cover designer. Mixing your book royalties with your day-job income or grocery money leaves you totally blind to whether your writing is actually turning a profit.

  • The Reality Check: You can’t grow what you aren’t tracking, and your business needs its own identity separate from your personal life.

  • Jo and Jodi's Advice: We promise you do not need a master's degree in finance to do this. You just need some healthy boundaries. Setting up a dedicated business account and checking your numbers for just 15 minutes a week strips away all that emotional money anxiety. It turns "Can I afford this?" from a stressful guessing game into a simple, clear math problem.

4. Investing isn't the same as spending

It’s easy to look at business expenses—like newsletter swaps, formatting software, or ads—as money lost forever. That mindset makes us hunt for the absolute cheapest option every single time, even if it hurts our quality or burns us out.

  • The Reality Check: A CEO doesn't just spend money; they invest it to buy back their time or grow their reach.

  • Jo and Jodi's Advice: When you buy a smart tool or hire an amazing assistant, you're investing in your own sanity. If spending $500 on a system saves you 10 hours of stressful admin work a month, ask yourself: "Can I write $500 worth of new words with those 10 hours?" If the answer is yes, that's not a loss—that's a massive win for your career.

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to wait until you have a massive twenty-book backlist or a big publishing deal to call yourself a CEO. The shift happens the exact moment you look in the mirror and decide that your writing is a legitimate business worthy of structure, protection, and respect.

Once you change your mindset, your bank account usually loves to follow. We're right here in your corner, and we are so ready to help you do this!

ACTIONABLE ITEM:

This one is physically easy, but emotionally? It can be incredibly tough.

If you have a physical copy of one of your books lying around, go grab it right now and hold it in your hand. (If you’re strictly digital for now, open your high-res cover file on your screen).

Now, take a deep breath, step out of your author shoes, and put on your CEO hat. Look at it with totally objective, unsentimental eyes. Forget for a moment that this is your precious book baby, forged from your actual blood, sweat, and tears.

Ask yourself these three brutally honest questions:

  1. The Shelf Test: Does this look like it belongs on a prominent table at a major bookstore, or does it look "home-made"?

  2. The Competition Test: If this book were placed right next to the top-three bestsellers in your exact genre, could it confidently compete for a reader's attention?

  3. The Leverage Test: This isn't just a story—it is a valuable piece of Intellectual Property. How many different ways can you make it work for you? Can it become an audiobook? A special edition hardback? A translation? (Don't worry, we are going to dive deep into exactly how to do that in later chapters!)
